Nicknamed the ‘Friendly Races’ for the warm welcome it extends to all who race or watch, for sixty years the Southern 100 has been a firm favourite on the road racing calendar.
Raced on the technical 4.25 mile Billown Course, which has hardly changed since the first races in 1955, greats like Bob McIntyre, John Hartle, Joey Dunlop, Ray McCullough, Brian Reid and Phil McCallen have carved their own pieces of Southern 100 history.
Some racers have become almost synonymous with ‘Southern’, in particular Ian Lougher and Chris Palmer, who each became great supporters of the races and in return received plenty of support from the fans.
Here we have mined a rich vein of nostalgia to bring together a fascinating history of the first sixty years of the Southern 100.

Michael Dunlop was the undoubted star of the 2011 Southern 100, mixing it at the sharp end all the way and snatching a dramatic victory in the solo Championship race. But he wasn’t the only big name making headlines; Guy Martin, Ryan Farquhar, Cameron Donald, William Dunlop, Dan Kneen, Ian Lougher, Chris Palmer, Wayne Hamilton and Conor Cummins were all determined to make their mark.

Southern 100 2014 DVD
Original price was: £17.£3Current price is: £3.The 4.25 mile Billown Course was the scene for a series of epic battles in July 2014 as the Southern 100 rolled into town.
The usually peaceful roads around Castletown in the Isle of Man reverberated to sound of high-speed motorcycle racing as the best road racers in the world battle for championship glory.
Guy Martin, Michael Dunlop and Conor Cummins were all on form but there seemed little they could do to hold back Bradford’s Dean Harrison as he wowed the crowds with an exquisite display of speed and skill.
Supersport, Superbike, Supertwin – whatever he turned his hand to it seemed Dean had the edge.
That’s not to say he had it all his own way; the 650 race provided one of the closest finishes in the history of the event as Dean just squeezed out James Cowton by an incredibly slender .001 of a second!
The sidecars are always a prominent feature of the Southern 100 meeting and 2014’s offering certainly didn’t disappoint.
The entry boasted the most recognisable names in the sport including the father/son pairing of Ian and Carl Bell and TT sidecar supremo Dave Molyneux who had Benjamin Binns in the chair for the event.
Fresh from breaking his TT duck after 21 years of trying Dean’s dad Conrad was out to improve his summer still further with his eye on the Championship trophy and he’d employed the local talent of Jason Crowe for the occasion.

The races held on the Billown Course are unique on the Isle of Man – renowned for it’s real motorcycle road racing – in featuring massed starts rather than time trials.
Drawing entries from the world’s road racing elite the event is also known as one of the ‘must see’ races of the season with fans.
The 4.25 mile course, made up of narrow, fast public roads closed for the occasion, makes for fast and close racing which sees superbikes lapping at average speeds in excess of 110mph – no mean feat when racing elbow-to-elbow with your closest rivals!
2016 saw Michael Dunlop and his BMW Superbike on dominant form, eager to add to his growing tally of solo championship titles.
Dean Harrison and Ivan Lintin, both with reputations for success on the Billown Course, were out to make sure Dunlop didn’t get away scot free and local stars Dan and Ryan Kneen were more than up for a fight.
The sidecar class featured as much, if not even more, talent – including two crews who had won F1 sidecar World titles.
The proof of their abilities was found in the first 100mph laps of the course by sidecar outfits – in fact Tim Reeves, Ben Birchall and John Holden all achieved the remarkable feat with their respective passengers.

2017 saw a line-up of road racing royalty that, quite rightly, had fans in a state of great excitement even before the first wheel had turned.

With Jamie Coward, Michael Dunlop, Dom Herbertson and Ryan Kneen to keep Dean honest, the meeting was never going to be a dull one, especially when you add the epic sidecars into the mix.
